Philippine religious sister wins German human rights award

Sr.-Stella-Matutina-OSBThe city of Weimar, Germany, has announced that it is awarding its 2015 human rights prize to a Philippine Benedictine sister known for her efforts on behalf of Mindanao’s indigenous persons, fishermen, and farmers whose livelihoods are threatened by mining on the island of Mindanao.

Sister Stella Matutina, 47, “engages herself extraordinarily for the rights of the native population, despite being exposed to permanent threats to her safety due to her engagement,” the Weimar city council said.
